This paper addresses the importance and relevance of the Geneva Conventions within the context of International Humanitarian Law (IHL), analyzing their trajectory over the 75 years since their adoption in 1949. The objective is to assess the effectiveness of these conventions in protecting victims of armed conflicts, particularly in the face of contemporary challenges such as cyber warfare, drone usage, and the rise of non-state actors, like terrorist groups. The methodology used is a qualitative bibliographic review, focusing on a critical analysis of documents and studies concerning the practical application of the Geneva Conventions in current conflicts. The study concludes that while the Geneva Conventions are widely accepted and fundamental to IHL, their effectiveness is threatened by new types of conflict and the lack of adherence by some actors. It is proposed, therefore, that continuous adaptation of the rules is necessary to ensure their effectiveness amid technological and geopolitical transformations.
