The National Council of the Public Prosecutor's Office and its role in document management and preservation of the Public Prosecutor's Office's Memory

Abstract

This article aims to provide a concise account of the efforts undertaken by the Brazilian National Council of the Public Prosecutor's Office (CNMP) to, on one hand, establish normative guidance for the Public Prosecutor’s Office in fostering initiatives to preserve its institutional memory; and, on the other, to promote a culture of safeguarding the historical trajectory of each branch of the Public Prosecutor’s Office (Parquet), thereby enabling continuous dialogue with both its internal audience and the broader community. Such efforts seek to enhance public understanding and appreciation of the republican institution’s mission and activities. Through a review of relevant literature and regulatory frameworks, the study examines CNMP resolutions in light of existing scholarly discourse, highlighting the constitutional significance of the Council as a body that promotes effective and exemplary institutional practices. In this context, and on the occasion of the 105th anniversary of the Military Public Prosecutor’s Office—the oldest branch of the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office—the article also presents a brief overview of its historical development and its initiatives to preserve its institutional memory. Ultimately, the article highlights the essential role of the CNMP in ensuring continuity and providing clear direction for the management of institutional records and the preservation of memory within the Public Prosecutor’s Office. This includes overcoming budgetary constraints and adapting to the advancements of the digital era through the sustainable and optimized use of technological tools.
