Brazil´s Contribution to the United Nations Peacekeeping Capabilities Readiness System – Challenges and Perspectives.

Abstract

On August 23, 2021, Brazil received confirmation that the United Nations (UN) registered a Brazilian infantry battalion, an engineering company, and two quick action forces, inspected in July, in the Peacekeeping Capabilities Readiness System. This article aims to present the system that allows the UN to respond quickly to international crises and conflicts, to analyze the Brazilian decision to join such a system, as well as the United Nations´ performance in the field under current circumstances and ongoing initiatives to improve the performance of peacekeeping operations, such as increasing the participation of women. Finally, the article explores possibilities for Brazil´s effective contribution to peacekeeping missions beyond military capabilities.
